Slips, Trips, and Falls: Keeping Your Workplace Safe Underfoot
Wet, sloppy floors can cause tremendous risk for slips and falls that lead to serious injury. You may not even realize there are also many other hazards around the office that can be serious risks for a slip or fall. These seemingly minor incidents can result in painful and potentially debilitating consequences for employees.
To keep those walking around in your facility safe, the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health & Safety recommends the following in preventing slip and fall accidents:
- Act fast on spills: Clean up any liquid or debris immediately. Leaving slick spots unchecked is an open invitation for disaster.
- Mark the hazards: Make sure wet areas and other dangers are clearly labeled so people can steer clear.
- Keep it tidy: Regularly sweep or mop to remove clutter, and ensure walkways are always clear of obstructions.
- Secure that flooring: Tape down or tack in any mats, rugs or carpets that don't lie flat.
- Close those drawers: Always make sure file cabinets and storage units are shut tight.
- Contain those cords: Cover up any cables crossing high-traffic paths.
- Light it up: Maintain proper illumination throughout, replacing burnt-out bulbs right away.
